The 2008 National Conference of IAP2M (International Association of Project & Program Management) was held at Aoyama Gakuin University, Aoyama Campus, on April 26. The general theme for the conference was “Knowledge-intensive Project Management in Service-oriented Society: Foundations and Methods for Innovation and Sustainability.”

After the first individual session in the morning (10:00-12:00), there was a general meeting in the early afternoon (13:00-14:45), where Chairman Kunio Yoshida gave a brief introductory address, and Osaka University Professor Kazuo Ogawa delivered a keynote lecture on “Technological Innovation and Japan’s Economy for Sustainable Growth.” According to Prof. Ogawa, the sluggish growth performance of the Japanese economy for the last decade or so can be attributed to the declining rate of TFP (total factor productivity) growth, which should be accelerated by networking universities and businesses, especially small-sized companies, in various localities, and also by improving the skill level of human resources through science/engineering education.

In the second individual session in the late afternoon (15:00-17:00), there were quite a few interesting presentations, including Prof. Kenichi Aihara's "KANSEI Value Creating Compound Eye Power Through Program Management,” (where intuitive feelings using the both sides of the brain are considered important for innovation to create new social values), Prof. Seiichi Fujii’s “Japanese-style Innovation Model for Competitive Advantage,” (where the business capabilities of human resources tend to be accumulated over time for product innovations in the Japanese-style organization, compared to the American-style organization with a business framework to be maintained in changing market conditions), and Prof. Shigenobu Ohara’s “Epistemology and Methodology for Cross Disciplinary and Integrative Views in Project Management” (where some fundamental ideas about establishment of the fourth generation PM standard, namely “Kaikaku Project Management,” are presented to fill the gap between science and practice in this field).

The conference was concluded with a workshop on “Approaches and Methods of Project Management for Enhancement of Project Values” (17:10-18:40), which was followed by a networking party (19:00-21:00).
